Rachael joined Mackinnons in 2018 after graduating from the University of Aberdeen. She qualified in 2020 and works within our Dispute Resolution department.

Rachael works on a range of personal injury matters, with a particular focus on offshore accidents and investigations in the fishing and shipping industries. She also carries out general commercial litigation work and gives guidance on Guardianship applications.

Rachael is ranked as a Band 4 solicitor in the 2025 Chambers Guide for Personal Injury (Defender). She is a tutor in Civil Litigation on the Diploma in Professional Legal Practice at the University of Aberdeen.

Maritime Safety Week 2023

As Maritime Safety Week comes to a close and we mark the 35th anniversary of the Piper Alpha disaster, it is clear that safety remains as important as ever. With thousands in Scotland and many more further afield working at sea, Maritime Safety Week aims to shine a spotlight on safety initiatives that have been introduced and highlight areas of potential improvement. As Sarah Treseder of the UK Chamber of Shipping commented “one death or injury at sea is one too many.”

The Seafarers' Wages Bill

Earlier this year, P&O sparked widespread outrage by dismissing almost 800 staff members before employing agency staff on a lower wage. It was widely reported that a large portion of the agency staff would be made up of foreign workers, with the RMT Union noting that some were to be paid well below the UK’s minimum wage.

Why it pays to stick to the redundancy consultation requirements

It is clear that the current Coronavirus pandemic is having the biggest impact on employment since the Oil and Gas downturn in 2007. As a result of these ever-changing times, and while facing the potential of mass redundancies, it may be tempting to gloss over consultation requirements. However, the recent Employment Tribunal decision of T Low & others v Jamie’s Italian Limited (In Administration) & others demonstrates that doing so could prove costly to the Employer.
